The Lawn Guys: Four Reasons as to Why People are Advised to Retain the Services of Experienced Lawn Care Firms

Four Reasons as to Why People are Advised to Retain the Services of Experienced Lawn Care Firms

       by Donald Dubay

People shopping for lawn care firms to which they can ‘outsource’ the tasks that revolve around caring for their lawns are typically advised to ensure that they only retain the services of experienced lawn care firms. At the very least, where they can’t find experienced firms to work with, such people are advised to work with those associated with people who have worked for other (major) lawn firms for many years. The latter, it is presumed, would tend to be people with lawn care experience, which they hopefully transfer to the firms associated with them.

Of course, the more experienced lawn service firms tend to charge higher prices than the upcoming lawn service firms. It is for this reason that many people have to be shown why it is indeed in their best interest to retain such (expensive) lawn service company, if they are to do so – while foregoing the cheaper but less experienced lawn service company. What we proceed to look at, then, are four reasons as to why the advice for people to only retain the services of experienced lawn service company makes sense.

It emerges that the reasons as to why people are advised to retain the services of experienced lawn company include the facts that:

1. Experienced lawn and landscape firms tend to know what works, in terms of lawn care practices: this is to say, in other words, that they don’t fumble. You tell them the type of lawn you want to end up with, for instance, and they instantly tell you what species of grass you should plant. Your lawn gets infested with a specific pest, and they instantly know what pest control measure to initiate. Now in theory, this knowledge of ‘how things are done’ may not look like a big deal. But in practice, it is quite can make the difference between successful lawn care and failed lawn care.

2. Experienced lawn or landscape care company tend to know what doesn’t work, in terms of lawn service practices: knowledge of ‘what doesn’t work’ turns out to be just as important as knowledge of what actually works. What you don’t want is a firm that will be ‘experimenting’ with various lawn care approaches on your yard! Yet that is precisely what you are likely to get if you retain a lawn service firm which is completely inexperienced.

3. Experienced lawn firms tend to have track records they can refer you to: it is often said that the best way to gauge the effectiveness (or otherwise) of a service sector firm is checking out its references. But how is a lawn care firm which is totally new in the field supposed to have past clients it can refer you to? The availability of a referable track record on the part of experienced lawn firms is thus what makes them ideal.

4. Experienced lawn firms tend to have capacity to handle major projects: you approach the folks at an experienced lawn service firm, and instantly notice that they know exactly what it is likely to take to bring a given lawn care vision into fruition. The inexperienced firms, on the other hand, tend to be either overoptimistic or plainly naïve when it comes to these things. Then again, if a lawn service firm has been in operation for a long period of time, and it has been making profits, chances are that some of those profits will have been ploughed back into the business. That would translate into better lawn service capacity – to handle bigger or more complex projects with ease.

Lawn Care Training: The Lawn Care Calendar

Lawn Care Calendar by Classic Lawns

A beautiful lawn does not come without some effort. Year-round care is needed to achieve that bowling green look; below is a guide to what you should be doing in each month.

These are the lazy months in your lawn care year! If weather is mild, occasionally cut the grass with the mower blades set high – to maintain about an inch of growth. Check equipment. Keep off the grass if frozen or waterlogged. Keep an eye out for any fungal diseases; treat with a suitable fungicide.

Rake the grass thoroughly using a special rake or wheeled equipment. Spike the lawn all over and apply lawn sand if necessary. Keep mower blades high and just ‘top` the grass. Remove all debris from the lawn prior to first cut.

Re-seed bare patches, apply fertilisers and moss killer towards the end of the month. Mow regularly, lowering mower blades gradually to 3/4 inch. If moss is a problem, use a good brand of lawn sand and rake up the dead moss a fortnight later.

Keep mowing, increasing the frequency as required. Treat with selective weedkillers or combined weed/feed preparations if you haven’t fed the lawn in April.

Mow lawns twice a week if possible working to a definite pattern. Water grass if necessary, remembering to soak thoroughly. A good soaking is better than frequent light watering. Trim lawn edges.

Treat grass with second application of fertiliser or weedkiller/fertiliser. Water in as necessary. Don’t crop grass too closely – raise mower blades as required.

Keep on mowing regularly and watering as necessary. Fill any cracks caused by drought with a mixture of sharp sand and soil.

Raise mower blades to allow the grass to thicken and protect roots from winter frost and snow. Increase interval between mowings. Apply Autumn-Winter fertiliser, weedkiller and moss killer.

Rake out thatch from turf and spike lawn to assist drainage. Brush in peat and sharp sand. A rotary mower with a collector is particularly useful at this time of year to collect dead or loose leaves. Continue cutting as necessary.

Use a stiff broom to remove wormcasts from the grass. Raise mower blades to allow 1 inch cut. Don’t mow if very wet as this will compact the soil and encourage waterlogging. Treat “fairyrings” with fungicide.

Rake all debris from lawns. Continue occasional cutting if weather is mild. Service your mower and any other equipment.
